The sturdy paperbacks in the World Religions series present many excellent photographs along with discussions in question-and-answer format that convey each religion's origins, beliefs, and practices. Islam begins with "Abdul's Story," a first-person account of the daily life, outlook, and aspirations of a 15-year-old Muslim boy in London. The chapters that follow explain the history and traditions of Islam as well as the practices and values of Muslims today, including issues such as adultery, women's rights, contraception, and militants. Many visual and verbal references to Muslims in England indicate a British origin, but the book's focus is worldwide, and the appended list of organizations includes only those in North America. Besides this attractive introduction to Islam, volumes on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and Sikhism are also available in the series. Carolyn Phelan
