Argues that authority is our ability to create and enlarge ourselves and others, and that our misconceptions of authority create dissatisfaction with life

Eugene Kennedy presently teaches at Loyola University.
As the author of more than 40 books, many of them dealing with either American Catholicism or Chicago politics, Kennedy has frequently--if not always explicitly--invoked authority as a theme in his work. Here, along with Charles, who directs the undergraduate medical education program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, he looks at the nature of authority itself. The authors are quick to distinguish between the positive, nurturing aspects of authority and the negative, repressive aspects of authoritarianism, and theirs is not a knee-jerk lament over the breakdown of morality or loss of authority in today's society. Instead, they provide a thoughtful analysis of how the information and space ages have caused traditional hierarchies to collapse and how the role of authority has been affected in such institutions as marriage, family, education, workplace, religion, professions, government, and law.
