Lowe is a Japan-based English writer who has made three visits to China in recent years. He writes not as an expert, but rather as a tourist, and for the tourist. Unlike many travel writers on China, he doesn't gushin fact he complains a lot about indifferent service, neglected facilities, unruly lines, and indifferent bureaucrats. These, he says, are the challenges to the independent traveler. The major tourist areas are covered, including Tibet, which is becoming one, and there is a short chapter on Taiwan for comparison. While not a particularly notable book on a subject that is becoming saturated, this does give a realistic picture to those contemplating independent travel. Harold M.
