Monumentalität der Auffassung, Sinn für Plastizität und Präzision der Zeichnung verleihen im Verein mit der architektonisch strengen Komposition seinen Bildern einen würdevollen, herben Charakter. Die Farbe, klar und kühl oder tonig abgestuft, tritt als Ausdrucksmittel häufig hinter den übrigen Elementen zurück. Obwohl dem Maler die Kunsttraditionen von Florenz, Venedig und anderen Zentren gut bekannt waren, ist sein eigenes Schaffen nicht an die Stilentwicklung nur einer dieser lokalen Schulen gebunden, es verschmilzt vielmehr in exemplarischer Weise progressive Anregungen und bereitet die Entfaltung der Malerei im 16. Jahrhundert vor. Jedoch übten Mantegnas Werke nicht nur auf die Zeitgenossen nachhaltige Wirkung aus.
